Course Overview
Beyond the Basics - Real Operative Skills
The Advanced Laparoscopy Workshop is built for surgical residents and practising surgeons who have completed basic laparoscopy training and are ready to operate at a higher level. This is not an introductory course, it is a focused, high-intensity skills upgrade.
Over three days, you will move from foundational competency into the territory of real operative laparoscopy. Sessions cover advanced intracorporeal suturing and knot-tying, structured simulation of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and appendicectomy, complex dissection techniques, and decision-making under simulated operative conditions.
With a maximum of six participants and a faculty-to-participant ratio of 1:3, this is as close to personalised surgical mentorship as you can get outside an actual operating theatre. Every participant leaves with a verified certificate, a personalised performance debrief, and tangible skill they can apply immediately.
Who Should Attend
This Course Is Designed For
This is an advanced course. Participants should have prior laparoscopy exposure before attending.
Senior Surgical Residents
Mid-to-senior level residents (year 2+) who need to accelerate their laparoscopy competence ahead of fellowship or specialist exams.
Practising General Surgeons
Surgeons currently in practice who want to extend their laparoscopic repertoire or refresh skills in specific advanced techniques.
Basic Course Graduates
Those who completed the ALA Basic Laparoscopy Course and are ready to progress to the next level of operative simulation training.
Fellowship Candidates
Surgeons preparing for minimally invasive surgery fellowships who need documented advanced laparoscopy skills for their applications.
Surgeons Returning from Leave
Doctors returning from extended leave, maternity, or sabbatical who want a structured refresher on advanced laparoscopic techniques.
International Medical Graduates
Doctors trained abroad seeking to demonstrate advanced laparoscopy competence within the Nigerian surgical training context.
Entry Requirements
Prerequisites for This Workshop
Unlike our Basic Course, the Advanced Workshop requires prior experience. These requirements ensure every participant gets the most from the three days.
- Completed a recognised Basic Laparoscopy course (ALA or equivalent), certificate required
- Currently enrolled in or have completed a surgical, O&G, or related postgraduate training programme
- Demonstrated basic competency in camera navigation and bimanual instrument handling
- Working knowledge of laparoscopic anatomy and common operative indications
- Confirmed attendance for the full 3-day duration, late arrivals compromise cohort learning
Not sure if you qualify? Send us a WhatsApp message describing your laparoscopy background and we will advise you on the right course within 24 hours.
Faculty Ratio & Cohort Size
The Most Intensive Ratio We Offer
The Advanced Workshop deliberately limits enrolment to six participants, achieving a 1:3 faculty-to-participant ratio, the most hands-on experience available at any of our courses.

Learning Objectives
What You Will Be Able to Do
By the end of this workshop, every participant will have demonstrated competency in these advanced operative laparoscopy skills.
Perform Advanced Intracorporeal Suturing
Execute confident intracorporeal suturing including needle loading, tissue approximation, and both square and sliding knot-tying techniques at speed.
Complete Simulated Cholecystectomy Steps
Work through the key operative steps of a laparoscopic cholecystectomy on a simulation model, achieving the critical view of safety and controlled dissection.
Execute Complex Tissue Dissection
Demonstrate controlled dissection of anatomical planes, safe use of energy devices, and appropriate haemostasis techniques in complex simulated scenarios.
Apply Advanced Haemostasis Techniques
Use bipolar diathermy, monopolar hook, and harmonic scalpel correctly for haemostasis, with understanding of spread of energy and thermal injury avoidance.
Manage Intraoperative Complications
Identify and describe the management of major intraoperative laparoscopy complications including vascular injury, bowel injury, and bile duct injury.
Perform Appendicectomy Simulation Steps
Complete the structured steps of a simulated laparoscopic appendicectomy, demonstrating safe dissection, ligation, and specimen retrieval technique.
Navigate Complex Anatomical Scenarios
Demonstrate sound surgical decision-making when faced with adhesions, distorted anatomy, or unexpected intraoperative findings in scenario-based sessions.
Pass Advanced Structured Assessment
Complete a timed, faculty-observed advanced assessment task using an adapted OSATS instrument, achieving the required competency threshold for certification.
